Tree of Life loses a branch

Tree of Life, Broadway.  Not a good look on a Sunday - one of the busiest shopping days.

Bond's getaway

BIG W, Warringah.  I was interested to see this temporary 'pop-up' display unit from Bonds (PacBrands).  Obviously cheap, it is also mobile and recyclable - but looks, well,   cheap.... which works in the discount department store environment I suppose.  It did have me thinking whether it was portable so that PacBrands could stage a quick getaway ?

Country Road's hang ups

Country Road, Warringah mall.  I think this display must have fallen into the gap between concept and execution.  It does nothing to enhance the merchandise and doesn't convey a message - very bland.

Simplicity and Symmetry

Bag & Baggage, World Square. The human brain seeks out symmetry. The clever merchandiser uses this to his/her advantage. This is an outstanding example of how effective a simple 3 x 3 presentation can be.

COOL LIGHTING

Camper store, Chatswood Chase. Cool lighting increases visual interest in this footwear store. The simplicity of display focuses the eye on the product.

CRED OFF THE WALL

SDS, Surf Dive n Ski, Westfield Chatswood, wall display lends street cred.

SOLEFUL

SDS, Surf Dive n Ski, Chatswood Westfield. Striking display - probably supplier funded - Havaianas anyone ?

INSIDE THE HYPE

Hype, Westfield Chatswood. Innovative merchandising effect on the wall.

BOOKSTORE TAKING FLIGHT

Angus and Robertson, East Gardens. Good looking store, warm and appealing. I was especially impressed by the Lonely Planet travel promotion, how strong the offer was, and how well it was executed. A great job.

URGENCY SELLS

Target, East Gardens. Displays shows good 'urgency' at front of store - pulled me in, but I was more disciplined than usual :)

OUTSTANDING PHARMACY

Roy Young Pharmacy, Chatswood, Westfield.  Very impressive disciplines in layout, planograms and merchandising, signage and customer service.  Note especially how pricing is well-signed, a must for recessionary times, and older customers.  A minor criticism is the overuse of the 'save' wallpaper hanging from the ceiling, but arguably necessary in these times.  Worth a visit.

ICE COLD

New product arrivals are fundamental to engaging customers' interest and yet sometimes retailers don't consider how to present new product in an interesting way.  This store, Ice in Chermside,  has done a particuarly poor job of displaying its new arrivals - see if you can spot the sign (clue: look for yellow), its' very small and tucked away.  In addition, the new product simply looks limp on the rack, and really needed to be displayed some other  way.  Even the mannequin looks tired and disinterested. Perhaps heading straight for the markdown rack ?

HOW MANY TAKERS ?

Sometimes retailers do all the right things but consumers just don't take the bait.  This is Angus & Robertson in Chermside mall.  The table is laid out with specials for Mother's Day - displays look great and the store's presentation standards are very high.  Have a look at the video clip, taken Wednesday lunch time - lots of customers in the mall, but how many takers ?  Tough times. Perhaps not aggressive enough ?
